Whether he was painting a game of cards or a stop along the Underground Railroad, Jacob Lawrence (American, 1917–2000) believed the emotion he could portray in a scene was just as important as its subject. Having grown up during both the Great Depression and the Harlem Renaissance, he told stories of the struggles, successes, and everyday life of the African American community through his paintings. Though often dealing with heavy subjects, Lawrence—as both an artist and a teacher—wanted his work to express hope and progress. Over his prolific career, Lawrence was elected to the American Academy of Arts and Letters and won the National Medal of Arts, the NAACP’s Spingarn Medal, and numerous honorary degrees from universities such as Harvard, Howard, and Yale.
